I have long admired Hipsu's dam, Fidelis Zini. She is far back in my Mushka and Iilvari's pedigrees, but I've always sought out dogs that were closer to her. Zini was born in 1995 and had five litters between 1996 and 2003. She passed away in 2010. So often when coming across photos of dogs I like, upon looking at their pedigrees I have seen they are her decedents. Her type seems to be quite potent and the attributes that she passes on to her descendants are very typical, to the point where often I can guess that a dog has her in their pedigree. Her type includes a teddy bear type head, incredibly well spaced apart smaller ears that have a very broad base, a short broad muzzle, an abundance of coat that is quite long, particularly around the rear, a long very well furred tail and a slightly longer body. I had the honour of meeting one of her daughters in Belgium in 2013, Fidelis Dreaming Bear who was ten years old at that time and very typical of a Zini daughter.
Many hours I have spent researching her progeny and trying to find a son or grandson that I could collect semen from. This search was hampered by age- all of her offspring now being quite old, or had passed away; and by the limited litters that her offspring then produced and if the litters were with dogs I liked. PRA was also prevalent in these lines, which, as this was before genetic testing was available, meant breeders often simply stopped breeding with the lines.
Mid 2013 I was very surprised when I saw hip score results published on Koiranet for Turnukan Hugo, Zini's absolutely stunning son who I had spent much time drooling over. As he was 13 years of age and didn't previously have hip score results published, I had assumed he was in pet home and/or neutered. However hip scoring a 13 year old dog must mean that there was now an intention to breed him! With much enthusiasm, I contacted his breeder, she informed me another breeder was hoping to breed with him, and also advised he was PRA affected himself. I decided to proceed with my request for his semen to be collected and I would simply put him to a clear bitch. His owner thought long and hard about my request, but was concerned with the two hour drive to the closest vet who could do the semen collection. Hugo suffered from car sickness and at his age this was quite a risk for his health. I even tried to get a vet to do a house call to collect his semen (yes I was getting adventurous! ) but unfortunately none of them were comfortable doing so. Very sadly, Hugo passed away in 2014 at 14 years of age.
Fast forward a number of months. Through the wonders of Facebook I met the owner of Hugo's brother, Hipsu. Hipsu had never been bred and his eye test results were 10 years ago. He is a gorgeous boy very typical of these lines. I discovered Hipsu was still entire, his owner was thrilled at the possibility of her beloved Hipsu siring puppies and she was willing to firstly take him for an eye test and then take him to Vaanta for his semen to be collected. I cautioned her that it was very likely that his semen would not be of good enough quality to freeze and export, but if she was willing to try, so was I. Firstly, he passed his eye test. Not affected by PRA like his brother, and no cataracts which was fantastic for his age. I didn't allow myself to get excited though, thinking he was 14 years old, that his semen wouldn't be viable. I've had much younger dogs collected from whose semen was not good enough quality to freeze. The day came, and Saga messaged me from the vets- his semen was viable! In fact the vet was surprised at the quality. Hipsu gave us two breeding units worth of semen, which I was very happy with.
I am over the moon to have succeeded in gaining semen from a Zini son! And such a lovely boy he is. His sire was also quite stunning with superb structure and has produced many lovely dogs. I feel very privileged to hold such old and precious lines.
Our gratitude to Saga for assisting to make this dream a possibility- and to Nina Toitturi for breeding such an amazing litter. We look forward to welcoming puppies from Hipsu in the future.
