medications

For Intestinal and Heartworm Prevention: Milbemax or Milpro
We use and recommend Milbemax or Milpro for intestinal worming and heartworm prevention.
Milpro and Milbemax have the same active ingredients, they are just different brands.
They come in two sizes, under 5kg and over 5kg.
Give monthly. It is imperative to use an intestinal wormer and heartworm prevention.

For Paralysis Tick Prevention: Advantix
We use and recommend Advantix for paralysis tick prevention.
Give fortnightly- it is imperative to not miss a dose or be late administering.
We pro-rata the ml per kg of the dogs body weight, as we find if a 10kg dog receives the 10-25kg dose they may experience adverse affects.
It is imperative to use paralysis tick prevention if you live in a paralysis tick area.

basic equipment

Crate
Crates are an invaluable piece of equipment for your puppy and adult Lappie.
We recommend a 36 inch wire crate. We don't recommend soft (material crates) for puppies as they will be chewed.

Puppy Pen
Use with young puppies to create a safe indoor area for them when unsupervised.

Identification Tag
Bright Star Buddies Dog Tags & Bandanas make amazingly cute identification tags.

Grass Toilet
Use while they are a puppy in puppy pen. Don’t use puppy pads, these will just
be chewed up. Need to ‘christen’ it by adding the scent of urine for puppies to associate it with being the toilet. Hose and dry in sun- can be useful to have two to rotate while one is being cleaned.

Car Tether
Attach this to a harness not a collar, as in the event of an accident there might be too much force on the collar.
I personally use a crate for car transport, as the dog can move around, any vomits etc are contained, and a water bucket can be hung inside the crate. But if you can't fit a crate in your car a tether is a great option.

Collar
A ‘biothane’ collar is a great option, it is a material similar to leather in appearance however it doesn't stain, stink or hold water. There are various online pet stores that make them, I would recommend sticking to 25mm or under in width. I don’t recommend harnesses as they encourage dogs to pull

Lead
Any leash is fine except for a retractable leash as this is terrible for teaching a puppy to walk nicely on a leash, and can cause injuries. For puppies you want a lighter leash, for adults a stronger leash.

Blow Dryer
If you plan to wash your Lappie at home, you’ll need a dryer to properly dry them to avoid hot spots. It is also incredibly useful for drying after rain, swimming etc.

Nail Trimmer
You will need to trim your puppies nails weekly, and your adults nails fortnightly. Some people are worried about trimming their dogs nails, and want to use vets and groomers instead. This isn’t really practical though as they need to be trimmed so regularly. So it’s something you really need to do.

Kibble
We don't recommend feeding kibble due to it being highly processed and containing fillers, but we are often asked for kibble recommendations and understand that feeding dry food is preferable for some puppy owners, or owners may use it sparingly in kibble dispensing toys. We find Lappies enjoy fish/salmon based foods, here's a suitable option from Open Farm.
Supplements

Pre and Pro Biotic
We recommend giving a pre/probiotic daily, ideally for the life of your dog, but at a minimum for their first year of life in order to build up their gut health- this will assist in protecting their gut from harmful bacteria, and in turn diarrhoea. If not on a daily regime, pre/pro biotics should always be given after antibiotic use.
We give to our puppies from 3 days of age through to when they leave for their new home, to give their gut the very best start in life. We use both EAC Inside-Out and Pron8ure.

Rose Hip Vital
This supplement is made from Rosehips and is scientifically proven to reduce inflammation protect cartilage and improve general health. It also has antioxidant properties.

products we do not recommend

Furminator
The ads for the fulminator make it look like a life saver but it is far from it! The fulminator doesn't pull out dead undercoat, it instead cuts the top coat causing damage that is irreversible. Lappie's have a double coat, the outer coat or 'guard hairs' are a protective outer layer that stop dirt, debris and water getting down into the undercoat. Continuous use of the fulminator damages this guard coat. Please stick to the recommended grooming products above.

Disposable Pee Pads
Whilst in theory these seem like a good idea, 9 times out of 10 these end up in a million tiny pieces from puppies chewing them. Stick to the grass pads recommended above.

Stuffed Toys
Plushy stuffed toys look cute and are extra fun for dogs and puppies to destroy... the result is a fluff filled backyard or in some cases a vet trip for a belly full of fluff! We recommend 'stuffless' toys as they are just as fun but less mess!

Raw Hide Chews
Although rawhide chews come in lots of fun shapes and sizes, your dog can chew off and swallow large pieces, leading to a potential choking hazard or intestinal obstruction. What’s even worse is how rawhide is created: rawhides are a by-product of the leather industry and are soaked and treated in chemicals like bleach and other toxic chemicals.
Please avoid them at all cost, no matter how pretty they market them!

Soft Crates
Soft crates can be chewed by puppies looking to make an escape for feeling a little bored. Collapsable wire crates are a much better option and are much more durable. Your puppy can use the same crate from puppy hood to adult hood.
