The Finnish Lapphund is widely reported to have an average lifespan of around 14 years, with most living between 12 and 16 years, and the occasional Lappie reaching 17. However, these figures are based almost entirely on data from the Nordic countries, where the breed has existed in modern hands in large numbers for many decades. In Australia, the population is still relatively young, and we do not yet have the long term, large scale data needed to determine our own accurate national average.

There are many reasons why Australian lifespan patterns may differ from Nordic statistics. Lapphunds in the Nordic countries are often kept outdoors and are rarely neutered unless medically necessary, while in Australia most dogs are indoor family companions and desexing is routine. Differences in climate, daily lifestyle, diet, exposure to environmental toxins, approaches to veterinary care and end of life decisions can all influence long term health outcomes. Australia also presents unique risks, such as paralysis ticks, venomous snakes, and higher urban traffic, that are less prevalent in Finland and surrounding regions.

By maintaining and publishing a detailed record of the deaths of Lapphunds we have bred or owned, including age, cause, and relevant notes, we hope to contribute meaningful Australian data over the coming decades. This information will help build a clearer picture of the breed’s true lifespan in our environment and provide prospective owners with transparent, evidence-based insight into longevity and causes of death within the breed.

It is important to note that this record will not be able to give insight into breed lifespan until well into the future. We have been breeding since 2013, so have many, many Lappies that are still alive and healthy.
