How Finnish Lapphund Markings Change As They Grow

A fascinating part of raising Finnish Lapphund puppies is watching their colours and markings develop over time. No two Lappies are ever exactly the same! Each puppy carries their own unique markings, and the way those markings evolve, expand and settle as they mature is part of what makes this breed so special.
Many new owners are surprised to learn that the puppy they bring home may not look exactly the same by the time they reach adulthood. This is completely normal for the breed and one of the joys of watching a Lappie grow.
Puppy coats are just the beginning
Most Finnish Lapphund puppies are born with darker markings than they will have as adults. Some may appear to have very minimal markings at birth, only for their tan points or patterning to slowly become more visible as they mature.
As their puppy coat starts to transition into their adult coat, colours can soften, deepen, or become more defined.
Tan markings often expand
In Black and Tan and Brown and Tan Lappies, it is very common for tan markings to expand and lighten as the puppy grows. What may start as small eyebrows or subtle cheek markings can become much more defined with age.
Chest markings, leg markings and facial points often become clearer as the coat develops and the adult guard hairs come through, whilst white blazes tend to disappear as they grow.
Brown coats can change dramatically
Brown Finnish Lapphunds often go through beautiful seasonal changes. A deep chocolate puppy coat can lighten to a warmer orange-brown tone, particularly with sun exposure. Some will darken again after coat changes, while others maintain that warmer glow. The depth of an adults brown coat also depends on their diet, and grooming products used.
The domino colour transformation
Our Domino Lappies often go through one of the most noticeable changes. Many start life quite dark, then lighten significantly during their early coat changes, sometimes looking almost like a different dog for a period of time.
As they mature, their darker patterning usually returns and settles into the beautiful contrast we expect in adult domino coats. This ongoing evolution is part of what makes domino Lappies so interesting to watch develop.
Wolf sable can take time to reveal itself
Wolf sable puppies can sometimes be difficult to identify very early on. When born, they look black and tan, and their true colouring may take a few weeks to properly show itself, and even then they often continue to change through adolescence.
As they move from puppy to junior and then adult coat, the layering of light and dark hairs can shift quite noticeably, giving them that beautiful natural, almost wild appearance the colour is known for.
Cream coats also develop depth
Cream Lappies often start quite pale as young puppies. As they mature, many develop more depth to their coat, sometimes becoming a richer cream or showing subtle shading.
Occasionally the opposite can happen, where a slightly darker puppy coat gives way to a lighter adult coat. Both are completely normal variations within the colour.
The beauty of watching them grow
One of the things we always remind our owners is that a Finnish Lapphund’s colour is part of their journey.
While colour is beautiful, what truly matters is the temperament, health and personality developing alongside that coat. The confidence, kindness and clever minds that Finnish Lapphunds are known for will always matter far more than exactly where a tan marking sits.
And that is part of the magic of the breed. You are not just watching a puppy grow. You are watching a one-of-a-kind dog become exactly who they were meant to be!
At Orical, we love celebrating these changes because it reminds us just how individual every single Lappie truly is!
